The common cold is a natural part of your child’s childhood, and while the illness can be unpleasant, it typically comes and goes within a day or two. However, when the signs and symptoms, such as a headache, coughing, and running nose, linger for more than a few days, you may want to consider consulting a paediatric ENT specialist in Singapore to determine if it is a more severe infection called sinusitis.

How To Differentiate Cold And Sinusitis In Children

Sinusitis occurs when the nasal passageways become infected, often due to a cold or allergic inflammation. Therefore, a sinus infection can start as a cold, allergic rhinitis, or other upper respiratory infection, only to become an additional infection.

In that case, and given that a cold and sinusitis share similar symptoms, how can you differentiate between the two conditions? Unlike the common cold, sinusitis exhibits the following symptoms:

Generally, over-the-counter medications can help alleviate the symptoms and clear up a sinus infection. Nevertheless, it is recommended to consult an ENT doctor and have your child undergo a sinusitis diagnosis to determine whether additional treatment is necessary.

If your child has a sinus infection, the paediatrician may prescribe an antibiotic for at least 10 days. Once your child is on medication, their symptoms should alleviate over the next 2 to 3 days. You should also notice the cough improving and the nasal discharge clearing. Even though your child appears to be recovering, ensure they continue taking the antibiotics for the prescribed length of time to prevent the infection from returning.

Meanwhile, you can take various steps to help alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of sinusitis. If your child is experiencing headache or sinus pain, try placing a clean, warm washcloth on their face for a few minutes at a time. Pain medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may also help. However, avoid aspirin, as there is a small risk that children can develop Reye’s syndrome if they are given this medication during a viral illness.

As for your child’s nasal congestion, drain their nose with saline nasal sprays if the secretions in their nose are particularly thick. You may also consider placing a cool-mist humidifier in their room to help them sleep more comfortably. Remember to clean and dry the humidifier daily to prevent mould or bacteria from developing.

Lastly, consult a paediatric ENT specialist if your child’s symptoms show no sign of improvement 2 to 3 days after starting the antibiotics. They may require a different treatment or a paediatric ENT evaluation for their sinus issue.
